Ripen butternut squash?
« on: October 21, 2007, 10:12 »
I have one small butternut squash that managed to grow this summer. It isn't fully ripe, will it ripen if I leave it in my (south facing) conservatory?
Or is it just more material for the compost bin??!!

Cheers HH
Keep digging

With plant, it might do in a warm, sunny place.

Not if taken off, only the skin will 'ripen'.

might be a general rule of thumb, also, I might be doing something wrong, but in my experience it does not work for all fruit, some do ripen in storage, some just don't. :(

That's the very thing with supie fruit, you buy it, it's green, and it never ripens, it rots.

I was going to ask the same thing, have just brought home three nice Butternut squashes from the new allotment, kindly left by the previous owner, but didn't know what to do with them to ripen them, thanks for the info,

They are now sitting nicely on the kitchen widowsill.
