So much is made of preventing hens from going broody, or getting them out of that stage if you don't want them broody but I need to know how I can encourage a hen to go broody?

I think I might go along to the Carlisle poultry auctions on 26 Feb and might find myself the proud owner of some hatching eggs to give it a go, but I'm not 100% sure of the merits of my venture.

• Can I get a chook to go broody?
• if I get hatching eggs so early in the season will I be wasting my money - ie will they be viable?

I leave some eggs in the nest to try and encourage them along
It worked last year I think (she may have been going broody anyway  )
So far no joy this year   I start by leaving in one in one day then that one & another the next day & so on, I mark them so I know not to collect the older ones

We can but try LOL
