Beansprout wine?
« on: September 23, 2009, 11:40 »
I grow beansprouts in a jar in the pantry to have in stir fries and in sandwiches.

There must be scope for winemaking here as they're so sweet.

Any thoughts?
Growing salad leaves isn't rocket science.

Maybe  They might be a bit watery to get a decent flavour but worth a go

I reckon a pea pod wine would be the nearest. You could do 50/50 pea pods and bean shoots???

Not made this one myself but my girl's book of dubious homebrews (well they are when I make them  :D) lists this :

2kg pea pods
250g concentrated white grape juice
900g sugar
4 litres water
3 teaspoons citric acid
1/2 teaspoon grape tannin
1 campden tablet
Wine yeast - preferably hick or chablis type

Cut up pods and boil in water gently for 20 mins - leave to cool
Strain liquid into fermentation bin & stir in grape juice, sugar, citric acid, tannin & activated yeast until sugar dissolved
Add air lock & ferment
Rack into clean jar, add campden tablet, seal & leave 3-4 months
Bottle and leave another 2-3 months

If you have a go, please tell us how it went cos I'm intrigued for one

New shoot  :)
