Strawberries
« on: May 13, 2009, 20:18 »
I've got a few strawberry plants in the greenhouse that have been hardening off for about a week. The plan is to plant them either in containers or directly in the soil at the weekend on my plot. Are there any idiot proof methods of doing this (seeing as the first ones i planted a month ago lasted about a week)?
Also is there anything else that could be grown in the same space?

The main thing with strawberries is that what ever you plant them in, pots or ground, the plant must sit at ground level with its existing soil level. they're very fussy this way; you can't put them a bit too deep (won't flower)  nor too high (roots dry out). Only at the level they're currently at so set aside a bit of time to do it right and you'll have success. Water them well afterwards and a weak solution of manure tea or such is helpful to get them off to a good start.

My strawberries cover the ground and there's not much space for planting anything else with them really .......

I have quite a few plants now.  Some I am keeping in the greenhouse and getting early strawberries (tonight I ate 2) and the others remain outside for a later crop.   :)

They should have never got in the gh, that's a proof method. Otherwise, you are a bit too late for planting fruit about, so you have to soak them at somewhat regular for a success.

Do you mean in between the strawberries? Don't think so, but weeds usually do well, look out for them and slugs. ;)

If you ae planting out strawberries - keep them well watered but not drowned....until they've had time to settle in. (Works for me)  ;)
