A lot depends on whether you have cold frame or greenhouse facilities at home.

You can get shallots & shortly onion sets in. Things like brassicas could be started at home, but they don't like a lot of warmth and really need a cool greenhouse or coldframe to go into.

It's not a bad time of year for planting fruit bushes & rhubarb.

Others will no doubt be along shortly with more suggestions.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

You could consider buying plants at the garden centre when you are ready - that will save you a month (which is about the time from sowing-to-planting if you start things off in pots).

But as DD said if you have a conservatory or greenhouse etc. then starting some things off would buy you some time on getting the allotment into perfect working order :) but otherwise I think you will be faffing about trying to keep things alive on windowsills.

My sowing schedule is here:
http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=56389.msg800654#msg800654

not a lot has gone in yet, as you will see :) and most of what I have started off are greenhouse crops.

There is a timetable of Sow / Harvest here:

Hi jenjen, As stated, fruit bushes can go in now and of course fruit trees. On the veg front you can start off all the following in pots without too much worry. Cabbage, cauliflower, sprouts and leeks. I say this with total confidence and I dare say other growers will extend this list.  :)

I use a company that dispatches plants at the correct time for planting or they now allow for collection in North Somerset. Not sure if I can name them on a forum but if you want the name, email me

You could chit potatoes- mine went in late last year and I didn't even bother to chit them, and they was no problem..
I've just sown toms on my window sill in a propergator.
I have also sown marigolds outside in modules to use in salads and as companion plants.

good luck!

Just a warning that unless you have a greenhouse to put them into, it is still probably too early by a few weeks to be starting tomatoes off indoors.  They can't really go outdoors until early June, so the risk of them getting too large and leggy indoors in the meantime is quite high.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
