Downy Mildew on onions
« on: August 03, 2012, 21:35 »
Hi guys, I'm just after a bit of help please.
All my onions (400+) have succumb to downy mildew, they look like they are past chemical or organic help, so I was wondering if it would be ok to lift them all now and freeze any bulbs that look ok?

Andy I have a similar problem but only have about 100 to deal with.

I cut the leaves down to healtthy tissue to try to give them time to ripen off, and took up those that had soft necks to use fairly quickly.

If the onions thmselves feel and smell normal, then they will be fine to freeze and use.

Hope this helps

it's about the only way to get anything usable - slice and freeze. You may want to double-bag them because of the smell ;)

quite - my OH froze some of the onion slices and put them in the same freezer draw as the frozen strawberries but didnt seal the bag enough or double bag......and when we used some of the strawberries for an icecream the other day there was a faint tang of onion

Thanks for the help everyone.... I pulled them all up yesterday morning and I've managed to peel, chop, bag and freeze 121 bags worth........................... 1lb in each bag!
Needless to say I've had to put the spare freezer on  !
