Black Compost Bins, white flies
« on: April 22, 2008, 12:12 »
Have ust opened our black compost bin, and had hundreds of tiny white flies in side.  Are these ok, or should I try and get rid of them.
It is a newish bin, three months old, so not full yet. Help..

This is normal. Put some shredded paper or cardboard in to offset all the kitchen waste and it will calm down. Give it a bit of a stir as well.
I tipped mine out completely on Sunday and shoveled it all back in again with some comfrey leaves to boost decomposition. If you haven't got any comfrey, wee is good. Or Tescos sell organic compost accelerator, not sure whether that is just wee.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Hi ....My compost bin was the same full of grey type flies. I mowed the lawn recently and put in some grass ~~~The flies have almost gone! I think the grass has raised the temp in the compost bin and the flies dont like it.

Hi, that happened to me last year. The white flies then escaped all over the garden and took up residence in the broccoli :(

Well, that's probably where they came from in the first place, the little white flies that live on brassica foliage, I'd guess.

tis true

with flies, if you just remove the lid and wait for a while before returning to the bin, gives them time to dissipate then you can carry on without the nuisance of them

I had a mouse sittiing in mine this morning  :D  You don't need to worry about a few flies, you could cut down on fruit but a compo bin is natural so don't worry
