a while a go one of my hens went broody, then she got mites and was poorly and pale for a few days but now shes getting back to normal.  She had stopped laying though it all, will she start laying again this year?  Will any of my hens who are well into their POL lay this year!

shazzer that's almost the same as what happened to my dora - except she had lice

she's moulting now and we can't even remember when we had our last 'real' egg...must be over a month ago now if not more.

still, they make nice pets

Feed them well and I'd say they should lay through this winter, not as many as in the summer maybe  :D

what would be feeding them well?  They have layers pellets, always in their feeder,  and veg scraps, which i must admit is not every day

Layers pellets all the time,

Greens every day,

A few treats (not junk food) to keep them happy and make them used to you,

Some mixed corn, a small handful per bird an hour or so before bed time (to keep them warm through the night).

This is the simplest of feeding regimes, many of the experienced keepers here feed differently, but for a beginner simple is best to start off with, just see how it goes and read through some of our topics here for more ideas.  The search facillity is very useful  :D

Mine havent started laying yet shazzer and they are 27/28 weeks (buff sussex) their combs etc are all nice and red now and they look the picture of health.  They have pellets, greens and corn and no amount of 'dinner table' talk seems to make a difference    I have put it down to the light, it was still dark here at 8 this morning and they are in bed at around 5.30/5.45 now so thats less than 10 hrs of light.  As long as they are healthy I wouldnt worry.

I mix the corn in with the layer pellets, as when I put the corn our for them separately , they don't ever bother with it. I give mine greens/lettuce maybe 2-3 times a week only.

Snap ! I was beginning to think it was just my hens. They are 29 weeks old and not an egg from any of the 4. I also put it down to the fact that the nights are drawing in and theres not too much daylight. I look every day but nothing.
Oh for those halcyon days of England long ago
