New Allotment from a field
« on: November 14, 2011, 16:24 »
Hoping to get a new patch of ground soon if the church legal people can wake up and progress the extention to our village allotments.
But what does one do to a new allotment?
Apparently it will be ploughed and is presently being grassed by cows.
Any suggestions welcome.

Welcome,

There's a lot of informative material in the 'Growing Help' section.
Also there's a lot of advice available from the Forums.

If you update your profile with your location, this will help with giving advice.

Above all,
Enjoy

You will almost certainly have wireworm infestation for the first few years.  If you grow potatoes, be prepared for them to be a sacrificial crop for a bit...
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I would not get it ploughed, treat area with roundup for a few weeks then maybe plough over once you have killed the roots. If you plough your just moving your problems 2 feet down and it will come back twofold.

Good Luck and welcome to the site

Hi Peter Rabbit
Sorry to disagree with AlotArds but get it ploughed.
A lot less work treating the weeds with roundup as they appear next year, than digging over a grassed field.

Irrespective of whether you have it ploughed, it's now the wrong time of year to apply weedkiller.  Wait until it's growing properly in the spring.

and you can always plan out where paths are going etc during the winter, as if you surface these appropriately then you won't need to spray there, and can focus your efforts on the growing areas  :D
