how high can rabbits jump?
« on: June 25, 2011, 22:59 »
my plants are being decimated by rabbits!  half the site has now put up rabbit fencing, so it's only getting worse as the number of plots they can get to lessens

I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet & put some fencing in myself.  there seem to be various heights of fence being erected, some of which are so low they look like a waste of time

I'm thinking that 12" below ground is sufficient, but not sure about the above-ground bit.  anyone have any thoughts?

many thanks

Andy

They can jump quite high, but more of a worry they can climb. Around 1 metre is a common height for rolls of fencing, be it chicken wire, rabbit netting, stock fencing etc, so a roll of this buried as you plan should suffice. You can buy it higher than a metre if you are worried.

Most of the rabbit fencing i`ve seen around fields has been 2ft high. Rabbits can jump over 3ft high if they have a run up but rarely do.

We have our stock fence lined to about half its height with rabbit netting. Works most of the time....... ::)

We have 1m above ground, of fine chicken wire (baby rabbits can squeeze through the larger size chicken wire holes)

and now rarelty have rabbits in our plot.

Others with 0.75 m high fencing are plagued  :tongue2:

thanks, that pretty much confirms what I was thinking - I definitely remember as a kid my sister's pet rabbit having wire on the top of the run & it being able to jump out quite easily when the lid was off!

I think I'll go for 5' wire & bury 1' - hopefully that will do the trick
