use for conservatory glass
« on: June 28, 2011, 21:10 »
Hi all - this is my first post (of many I hope) and I need some advice. We are going to grow veg + fruit in a cleared orchard and have come across one side only of an abandoned conservatory. It will be a four man ( three men and a woman !) job to move so how is it best used ? There are two windows in it and lack of money means we can't really buy extra glass to construct a proper greenhouse and it wouldn't really work as a coldframe as litfing it to water would be impossible.
It's too good to waste so any ideas welcome.

Welcome! :D I must say, before reading your whole post my first thought was cold frame. Is there any way you could take a picture and post it here? It would be useful for us to see what the thing looks like. :)

you could try asking on your local freecycle/freegle site for materials to make it into a potting shed  :)

Tomato house?  You would need a top and two sides for that, just to keep the rain off the foliage as a blight deterrent and to give protection from winds

Could it be raised on top of wooden posts and used as a slanting roof, with the sides filled in using plastic. Ok, you would have to renew the plastic every few years but in the mean time other window frames may be aquired to complete the greenhouse.

Thanks for all the suggestions - and sorry it took so long to come back. Ever tried digging the roots from an overgrown orchard ? It takes All your time. Will have a think about al the ideas and hopefully post a picture of the finished design in due course. Now back to the spade !

Just one problem, if it is strengthened glass (and it should be)  if it breaks it shatters into squillions of tiny bits.  Should this happen, you'll be picking up bits of glass for evermore.    Cheers,    Tony.
