Growing peas up poles
« on: March 06, 2019, 15:59 »
My early peas are beginning to grow & now need supporting, but what is the trick to growing them up poles please?  I know runner beans only grow one way round the pole, is this the same with peas though?  Looking forward to your thoughts.

Peas don't wind round a pole like beans do. They produce tendrils that cling onto things like twigs or netting, not so much smooth poles. You might need to rethink your support system.

i use roof battening knocked into ground at 1.5m intervals then tie strong string between them.

Then as the peas grow i simply add another row of string.  Repeat.

The peas cling nicely to that and its cheap... :)

I use cheap strwberry netting held up by a few canes. climbs up it great but it is a pain removing the plants at the end of the season.

I have grew peas up canes like a wigwam for a variety called alderman but I normally grow my peas up rabbit or sheep depends what i can beg of those who's throwing it away the netting should be about a metre high for me but maybe you could find some old wire at the re-cycle centre that would do the job and I have used old scaffold netting and plastic netting that they use on the building sites all worked fine for me

Use string tied around a tepee, every 25cm, if you are only growing a few. For longer rows you can use pea and bean netting  £1 Wilko

The £1 shops usually have it in, as well.
I've been using this method the last few years since I was given some wire mesh

I use polypropylene string using the same technique that Andyww2013 has described (how much you will need depends on how close your poles are and how densely your peas have been sown, because they do support each other to some extent.)

A rather appealing idea is to use jute string and then throw the whole lot on the compost heap after cropping, although not having tried that you'll need someone else to advise you whether the string rots down in a timely fashion...

That didn't take long DD  :D  :)

I do it with posts and Jute string, as Jay has suggested. It rots down well in the compost heap and saves a lot of faffing come the end of the season. It does sag a bit though, so will need some additional support as required, an extra post or two (or stick or anything else laying around in my case!) sorted that out.

DD, what exactly is debris netting?
And do you do that with everything you sow or just legumes?

Debris netting is basically the same as micro mesh only 1/4 of the price, its the stuff that you see on scaffolding usually green it's available from scaffolding suppliers and places like screw fix. Beans will climb readily up just plain cains by wrapping round them peas use tendrils to climb and need the extra support of string or netting.

I use poles along the row in a line spaced about a foot apart and use three or four rows of string along the rows.
I also use some the long thin cuttings from my weigels shrub and use them as pea sticks.
I'm now using only jute string in the garden from the pound shops. It easily rots down in the compost.

I grow up to 120' of peas each year and would not be able to source the amount of posts required to use jute as it does sag very badly when it gets wet. I've used the same polypropylene twine for quite a few years now. It easily pulls out of the pea straw with a bit of care.

The "what is" question has been answered and as to its use, I use it for anything that needs netting - brassicas especially. It keeps both the butterflies and the pigeons off. Not very effective against badgers, though!
