Question around Moulting
« on: October 12, 2007, 22:40 »
Hi, Have a hen who this morning had feathers - then by bedtime is practically bald! I couldn't believe it! Not only that has new feathers coming through so looks like a porcupine     Now I know moulting is completely natural but was wondering if such a fast moult is OK and is there anything I can give her as a helping hand?

it is unusual for it to come that fast , check her for mites as some birds will pull thier own feathers if they are itching .. you cant do anything but feed and water her  dont let the other birds attack her as they sometimes see it as a chance to realy peck the new pin feathers
still alive /............

Thanks Munty!

Yes thought was a bit strange - she is a bit quiet at the moment no evidence of mites. I will just keep an eye on her.  I was thinking of giving her a little hard boiled egg for the extra protein - what do you think?
Thanks!

She's love it.  Tinned tuna in spring water (not on oil or brine) is good too !

It must be the season for it. This year for some reason my birds have all gone in for a sudden hard moult. Its the way I like it, get it over and done with. The birds are much better when its like this, when it doesn't linger on for weeks and weeks.

Why not oil or brine Aunty...is it because of the salt?

Too much oil is bad for their liver aggy.  Tinned tuna is not considered to be an oily fish  :D
