For anyone who has made sloe gin this year....

After you've strained the liquid and bottled it, stone the sloes (really fiddly, but tolerable with some good music, film or conversation and a glass of sloe gin), and coat them in plain chocolate - they are really, really good.

I bought some little star shaped chocolate moulds this year, and put a little bit of chocolate in the bottom, half a sloe on top of that, and then topped it up with chocolate.  They're cooling in the fridge at the moment, so will post a pic when they're done!

You can also do it by dropping a sloe into a pot of melted chocolate, scooping it out with a teaspoon and plonking it onto a tray that has been dusted with cocoa.

We're also going to try caramelising some sweet chilli sauce and making chocolates with that!  :tongue2:

So Mel, did you get some pics in the end??  I made sloe gin and put them on the compost heap when finished, wish I had known about this then.  I will try it this year though...

Fordot to photograph them, but they were fabulous - made some interesting chilli chocolates at the weekend, though.  Caramelised some sweet chilli sauce, and then covered it with dark chocolate - yum!

I am going to sound thick now ....but I love sloe gin and our parish mag mentioned the vast amount of sloes to be picked along the lanes in the area.
But I don't know what a sloe looks like or the bush to pick it off.
I didnt want to ask then, but as no-one can see me on this forum I am taking the chance of asking now !!

Hi Awen, welcome to the loony bin

There's a good description and photo here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sloe

They just look like small damsons (which is what they are) - I had to buy mine mail order, as I can't find any here.

Hi Mel

Who did you order from?  I can't find any in local area and would love to have some sloe gin.

I got them off ebay

Just did a search for sloes in September, and a bloke in Fife popped up - I think it was £2-50 for a pound of freshly picked sloes.  Not the cheapest way of doing it, but I was desperate!

Thanks, will have a look and see if any are available, it's years since I had sloe gin and it would be great to get a bottle on the go.

You can also use Damsons with Gin instead of Sloes.  When you strain off the liquer, the damsons are great with whipped cream!!

Thanks for the suggestion Sue & Wilf, will try that next.  As I couldn't get sloes I have started a Cranberry vodka.
