How old are too old potatoes?
« on: December 28, 2012, 12:38 »
Hi all,

I planted potatoes this year, I cant remember what variety but they were not earlys. Due to bad weather and lack of light in the evenings I have still not dug them up.

They were due to be dug up when I harvested my pumpkins which seems like decades ago now.

Will they be safe to eat if I dig them up in the next couple of weeks, if of course they are not rotten?

Any advice would be greatly received.

If they haven't rotted or been eaten beyond worth, I think they'd be fine to eat as long as they haven't gone green. :)

Thanks, arugula.

I know it seemed like a bit of a dumb question but I'm not really experienced with potatoes.

Thanks again

I ate spuds in March one year ... apart from the occasional slug hole (it wasn't a very wet winter), they were fine.  Wouldn't recommend it as good practice though  8) :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Unfortunately I still have a whole bed of spuds still in,goodness knows when I will get to dig them up,sure they will be rotted after all this rain. Never, never left them in in 30 years of gardening but then again I've rarely had that many planted before, been trying to clear the ground-unsuccessfully as it turned out.

I remember when younger  that we used to eat spuds that had started to go wrinkly and sprout and that was the norm with everybody.  Never did me any harm I just look kind of strange :D
