planting peas
« on: February 16, 2011, 23:34 »
hello all still a novice in need of advice :)
last year i was not very lucky with my peas planting them direct into the ground, so i was wondering if it would be ok to plant peas in plastic cups?
i have an unlimited supply of these cups and was thinking of putting 1 pea per cup, once they had developed plant  the whole plant minus cup into final spot?
i also live in a flat so no greenhouse etc.

thanks

Hi  -  I,ve planted in cups in the past but have put  3 seeds in each cup and then planted about 5/6 inches apart and they should grow into a nice group of plants when planted out .  good luck

Th cups would work, but the reason you might not have been getting a good germination in the ground is mice, so if you put a bit of chicken wire over where youve sown the seeds then it might make some differance :)

If you want to be happy for a long time - fall in love.

If you want to be happy forever - take up gardening!

I put peas into trays of compost so that I can see what germinates. Found I get most of them to germinate that way as it stops the mice and other varmits stealing them  :D

Hi Chili,

DD has given lots of advice on here re peas which would be worth looking up. Even if his advice relates to either garden or allotment growing it is worth reading and  I'm sure you will be able to pick up tips from it that you can adapt to suit your growing circumstances if you are growing on a balcony.

One thing I saw he had reposted recently was the diagram of pea seed sowing with the pea seeds 2 inches apart. That in itself would suggest that you can get more than one pea per cup.

Good luck & enjoy
Unless otherwise stated it can be assumed ALL posts are by Pa Snip

Ahh ha having seen another of your posts I now realise you do have a plot, which makes looking up DD's post even more relevant than I first thought.

Plant your peas in yard long sections of guttering.  When showing, dig a slight trench and slide your pea seedlings into that.   Easy Peasy !  Cheers,   Tony.

Don't see why plastic cups wouldnt be just as good as multi cell pots or yoghurt tubs which have a long heritage of being used to start of seed :-)
Just don't forget to pop a hole in the bottom for drainage?

what are germinated & growing peas like for root disturbance during transplanting?

Are they affected like sweetcorn or are they pretty hardy?
