which critter stole some onion sets?
« on: March 22, 2008, 18:33 »
I cut the crispy top bit off my onion sets so the birds wouldn't pull them out for nesting, also covered them with a bit of soil so they were not visible... went to check on them before and discovered six gaps in my rows! Fortunatly had spares so replaced them but I want to know what it was that stole them. I think whatever it is must eat them as they were burried, do squirrels eat them?  :?

I'm not sure cutting off onion tops is a good practice for a start.

Anybody could have nicked them for seconds, squirrels will try anything, just like rats or some nasty birds, same thing, really, as per tree rat, flying rat, unfortunately, very true.

I had similar problems last year, I planted my sets in nice neat rows and a few days later many had been pulled up and left on the surface and some were missing. I too had cut off the dry wispy bit at the top but it didn't appear to stop the birds. I replanted  and covered them with a layer of fleece until they got rooted and this solved the problem for me.

Late in the summer I came across a mini stash of onion sets buriied in a shallow hole in in a corner of the allotment. I assumed this was squirrels?
