Out of interest and planning ahead....
« on: August 16, 2012, 16:56 »
I just wondered (as I trawl through the seed websites and catalogues thinking about next year!), there are things that I definitely want to grow because I love them, but which varieties to choose . I would love to know which varieties of the following are your favourites (and why if possible) and if there are any varieties you definitely wouldn't grow again (and why again if possible)?
1. Broad beans
2. Climbing/runner/french beans
3. Courgettes
4. Squash
5. Pumpkin
6. Peas

I am sure everyone will have their favourites  ;)

Just wanted to say about peas -- anything that is tall, not dwarf, as you get so much more for your effort.

and climbing yellow flat pod beans we wouldn't be without either  :D

1. Broad beans - Aqua Duluce for early and The Sutton to follow
2. Climbing/runner/french beans - Enorma Runner Bean, Cobra Climbing
3. Courgettes - Family likes yellow ones, Courgette 'Soleil' F1 Hybrid
4. Squash - Family likes pattypan squash which are fun
5. Pumpkin - take up too much space for what they are
6. Peas - Twinkle for early peas, Kelvedon Wonder to follow

These are the ones that suit the local growing climate. You do have to take into account what grows well in your area. For instance Cox Pippin Apples don't do well in the north east.

1 - don't grow them.
2 - White Lady runner beans and Purple Podded Trionfo Violetta french beans
3 - Parthenon courgette (self pollinating)
4 - Tromba d'Albegna, summer squash - my new favourite as it's doing so well this year
5 - I don't grow pumpkins, but lots of winter squash, my favorites are Thelma Sanders and
      Uchiki Kuri
6 - Alderman tall peas.

If you are growing on an allotment I would suggest having a chat with others on the site.  As Christine says you need to take the growing conditions into account.

Everyone seems to be telling you what they would grow again.

Your initial question is asking what we would not grow again.

Just thought I'd point that out for clarification purposes.  :)

I'm not growing rocket potatoes next year. It may have been the weather but they were extensively slug damaged.

Didn't the OP ask both questions? Its just that no-one has answered the second one yet. :D

Strangely although it is a very large allotment, I rarely see anyone - it may be the times that I tend to be there! And the odd ones I do see never seem to be able to recall exactly what variety things are. One allotment neighbour gave me some runner bean plants - grows them every year but doesn't know the variety!
The thing for me is the flavour and if others grow them they obviously like the flavours and that makes it worth a go. I shall work my way through everything that is listed as peoples favorites, over the next few years! I love trying new things. I really appreciate the replies.
Mumofstig - I have already bought some Uchiki Kuri squash seeds based on a previous post of yours, so now I have another to try :)

What no potatoes!
It's my first year growing anything but I've got to state that the potatoes I've grown have been a world apart from any that I've ever bought and everyone that has tried them has agreed with me.
Potatoes are a definite with me from now on,they really are worth the effort.
It's better to burn out than to fade away !!     ;)

My two-penneth of recommendations:

1. Broad beans - still working on this one
2. Climbing/runner/french beans - I grow Scarlett Emperor runner beans which I am always happy with and have been really impressed with Blauhilde purple climbing french beans.
3. Courgettes - I love Tricolor round courgettes which are so versatile
4. Squash - Sweet Dumpling squash and Patty Pan.
5. Pumpkin - I like Mars - nice mid-sized orange one good for Halloween, but am trying out hundredweight this year for the competition on here!
6. Peas - going to try Alderman as recommended on here next year.  I tend to grow mange tout instead of peas - I grew Shiraz Purple and Golden mange tout this year and both have been tasty and good producers.

I think the secret is always to try some different varieties as well as your favourites.  I just wish I had more space!

1: Broad Beans - pleased with Aquadulce (early spring sown, not over wintered), Express and Sutton .  Not been too impressed with Longpod in comparison, but maybe it's just been the weather.
2: climbing beans ...... Erm, they're still in the seed box, great plans etc
3:Courgettes - Black Beauty and a yellow (unwins free packet) whose name escapes me, after a slow start, they watched the Olympics last week and are both impersonating a certain Mr Bolt and throwing out fruit overnight
4: Squash - only tried once last year - it was a bad year !
5:Pumpkin - erm, we have a flower bud so we'll come a spectacular last in the competition
6: Peas -  Only tried Hurst Greenshaft and Keledon Wonder - KW this year - good crop, the last pickings are going in minestrone soup .... Along with the courgettes, beans etc ... Yum :D
