last feed for onions / shallots?
« on: June 09, 2007, 08:55 »
Have been told to stop watering onions and shallots now and to harvest in a couple of weeks - does this make sense? shall I try and sneak in one last feed before I stop?

Keep feeding if you want to - my winter onions are not ready for harvest yet, I reckon at least another month for the shallots, two from the onions.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

How do you know when shallots are ready to harvest?

cheers
Before you criticise someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes.
That way, when you criticise them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

The foliage turns yellow and completely dies back.  If you choose to harvest earlier, be very careful not to break the foliage since this provides a site for attack of neck-rot

Feeding and even watering should be stopped about a month prior to expected harvest time
