Curing Garlic and Shallots
« on: July 04, 2021, 17:53 »
Is it as good to cure them outdoors as in?  I was thinking about a rack under my shed eaves as it all gets in the way (and has a powerful odour) inside the shed and I have plenty of overhang but was worried about humidity in this wet weather?

Any wisdom out there?

Mine are in and out, I put them on slatted racks. As soon as the sun is out, they are outside, any rain, they go in the shed. If it is mixed i leave the shed door open to ventilate things.

Yes, ideal drying conditions are of course outdoors in the sunshine and any breeze - what you don't want is for rain to partly undo the process.

If the eaves give proper rain protection it sounds like a good spot given the current changeable weather.

Wherever and however you dry your crops, shallots take a lot more drying than garlic, having more 'juicy' necks and thicker skins - I sometimes struggle to dry my shallots quickly enough to prevent mould starting in the necks (I have been known to deploy a fan in the greenhouse in wet weather to try to speed things up!)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
