What second early potato varieties have you chosen to grow for 2011?
Did last years polls affect this years choices?
Or have you struck off into uncharted spud territory?
Vote and let us know!
If its not listed, tell us about it. Hopefully this, along with the "popular varieties" polls will help the undecided or spread the word on any varieties not previously mentioned. The list is based on varieties mentioned last year.

This year i decided to grow Charlotte, purely on last years poll results :)

Charlotte for me too, have grown them every year - although this is only my 3rd !
-
Charlotte & Kestrel. I never waver from them.
-
At the shop they had sold out of charlottes so i chose maris peer as second best.
-
Charlotte, grown in bags.
-
I grew Vivaldi and had a large crop of tasty potatoes especially when roasted as they really crisped up.
-
Charlotte and Marfona. Just ordered from JBA. I wanted Kestrel but they were sold out, so took Marfona as 2nd choice.
-
Charlotte and Maris Peer for me!
-
Charlotte because I really like them plus Maris Peer and Carlingford for something new
-
As i am totally new to this which spuds would be recommended for growing in bags as i am short of space. Any advice really appreciated.
-

-
charlotte for the first time and kestrel again as they make the best chips ive ever tasted and rosties
-
Kestrel always, and second year in a row, Juliette (lovely taste, good cooking qualities, disease & pest free, as well as a great yield despite the dry conditions)
-

Anybody else?
-
Maris Peer , which i grew last year and very very good and also going for Charlotte this year after the poll last year put them on top. ;)
-
Charlotte for me because of last years polls,
Went to garden centre to buy them and the seed spuds were about twice the size of my desiree  Is that normal?
-
Kestrel for me again this year, a good all rounder.

I know
I haven't spotted them in my local greengrocers, don't rem eating them when i was a kid (it was all kerr pink, records, queens, maris, golden wonder and king edwards... and the ubiquitous "white potato' whatever that is in the shops)
I'm gonna have to find them and try them...

Charlotte sold out in the pre-orders at our potato day, they were unusualy large seed tubers.
Anya sounds a nice salad potato so trying that, + 2 others for variety
-
Estima, Linzer Delicatesse, Vivaldi & Maris Peer.
-
Going with Charlotte this year as i've heard so much praise for them on this site and also going for Maris Peer as i did last year and was highly delighted with them :)

Having responded to the survey.... I wondered if I could follow on with a question?
I have a bunch of tubers/ 'belle de fontenay' (second early)...which are set for chitting. However I discovered with horror last night that some of them or going mouldy in the egg box... what am I to do? too early to put them in? should I throw them away (they have some growth already)?
Any advice greatly welcome!

To the poster about mouldy potatoes, I think you may have lost them, if you put them in the ground now they may just rot away. Are you in a cold region? If only the shoots are mouldy you could take off the worst and see if they produce new healthy ones.
But, if the main body of the potato is mouldy I cannot see them recovering. You might be able to get a refund for bad stock?
As for Second Earlies I'm going with Cosmos, is anyone else?
-
Thanks 'Jome' ! That is what I feared!
I fear that it is the potato itself that has gone mouldy... the damaged ones have chitted though...but I worried if I put them in the ground that the 'mould' may spread and make the lot diseased. But if not risky, then I will put them in... any view.

If you search the internet for mouldy potato chitting, most people say that you should chuck them away as the stock is infected with some disease or another. I wouldn't put them in otherwise you could risk infecting the soil with whatever is making them mouldy. There is still plenty of time to get some more seed potatoes. Sorry for bad news!
-
Thanks a lot for taking the time to respond to me! Bad news indeed... but I will follow your advice and get rid of the lot!
Too bad indeed !
All the best with your potatoes... Laurence
-
i love salad pots, so charlotte, belle de fontany and a few ratte, put a few charlotte in today will plant the rest in a week or 2, grew belle de fonts last year and i thought they were the best tasting salad spud i have ever grown and they were a good yield.

International Kidney
-
Tried them once. End of.
-
As this is new to me I am dabbling with Moris Piper, Engish Queen as I believe Moris Piper are a good all rounder and the Queens are good for mashing.

I'm growing mostly Charlottes as they tend to be the most expensive to buy apart from tasting rather nice.
A few rows of Kestral as well.
-
I'm growing Nicola a) because they were fine in the dry summer last year and b) because some crafty * bought all the Charlottes. :(
-
Charlotte and Smile. :)
