As i am totally new to this which spuds would be recommended for growing in bags as i am short of space. Any advice really appreciated.

first early,s would be better have a look at the list in the related question and maybe take your choice from what others liked
for me pentland javelin for a starter
when im with my 9yr old she's the sensible one

Kestrel always, and second year in a row, Juliette (lovely taste, good cooking qualities, disease & pest free, as well as a great yield despite the dry conditions)

Charlotte for me because of last years polls,

Went to garden centre to buy them and the seed spuds were about twice the size of my desiree  Is that normal?
If you want to be happy for a short time - get drunk.

If you want to be happy for a long time - fall in love.

If you want to be happy forever - take up gardening!

There can be a lot of variation between seeds...My PJs this year are twice the size of my Ambo,
nothing to worry about though ;)

I haven't spotted them in my local greengrocers, don't rem eating them when i was a kid (it was all kerr pink, records, queens, maris, golden wonder and king edwards... and the ubiquitous "white potato' whatever that is in the shops)
