Runner Beans
« on: August 14, 2012, 14:12 »
I still can’t remember exactly what liquid feeds are used for what type of vegetable plant    (is there an easy way to remember?). So, can I use a tomato feed for my runner beans?

Yes you can, as it promotes flowers which then equal beans  :)

Great. So I can use it now as the plants are still growing, or do I wait until the majority of flowers appear?

As a general rule, high nitrogen for leafy veg (eg Miracle Grow) high potassium for flowering/fruiting veg (tomato fertiliser of various types) and anything you can get your hands on quickly for pale, sickly looking veg!  :)

If you've not fed your beans yet, I'm sure they'd appreciate a feed now.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I use Maxicrop liquid seaweed fertiliser. The ordinary green plastic container-ed one for planting out, giving a boost to leaves if they look a bit yellow, and for crops with leaves including pots, sweetcorn and root veg. You do need to feed leaves of all plants whatever they are. The tomato one (red-containered one) is potassium-rich - ideal for feeding of established plants that will eventually produce flowers which result in pods/fruit. These are your beans, peas, tomatoes, squashes etc. To remember the difference between the two - just write the advice given down in your gardening diary and remember that if your veg produces flowers, treat it like a tomato!
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I keep my gardening diary near my fireside chair but if you want it on your shed door, you could laminate it.

I've never kept a gardening diary.  I've never needed to.
