Wheezing Hen
« on: October 04, 2007, 16:31 »
I have 5 Hens.  Recently my Light Sussex has stopped rosey and is making a noise like a punctured squeeky toy.  I think she is having trouble breathing as she is taking huge gulps of air with her beak open. She is eating well and is wandering around as she usually does.  I think she is still laying too.  I'm worried she may have Gapeworm, how would I know? My other chickens are fine.

It could be gape worm in which case she is in danger.  I would worm her with flubenvet just in case, none of the herbal wormers (or diatom) will touch it.

If she sound bubbly though, it could be a respiratory infection which may require antibiotics.  Is her nose clean, is she sneezing ?

She isn't sneezing nor does she have a runny nose, just the wheezing.  Its not a bubbly sound, it's dry if you know what I mean.   Isn't Flubenvet for intestinal parasites? Will it work on Gapeworm too?

Flubenvet works on gape worm  :!:

It doesn't sound as if she has a bacterial or viral infection.

Thanks Aunt Sally
I think I may have found a chicken-aware branch of my normal vet, so I shall go along tomorrow and tell him what you say.  I'm hoping they keep Flubenvet, last time I wanted it they said I had to buy enough for a flock.  I wish I had bought it now.
I'll let you know how I get on.
