whats the best lime to get for the plot? i have a bag of lime that you could use for building would it be ok on the plot??

I reckon not.  Safer & cheaper with agricultural lime.

Excellent.  So is Builder's lime actually slaked lime?

Yes, and it is a bit nasty to handle.

Ground limestone or dolomite lime are the best to use.  I know none of us like to spend money, but it's worth buying the right stuff. If you find a supplier geared up for gardeners you can buy a big bag 25Kg  quite cheaply rather than little boxes in the DIY shed.
