advice on bullying please
« on: September 09, 2012, 10:26 »
We have had our four chickens for almost 2 years now. It has always been clear that Millie is bottom of the pecking order but recently I had begun to think that she is being bullied. She is always slightly apart from the others but has access to food, water etc. In the last two days we have witnessed Henrietta, our white sussex, literally jumping on top of poor Millie. At a loss as to what to do now. When they are out in the garden things are better but that can only be when we are around. They have plenty of logs in the run, a dustbath, greens hanging up. Sometimes Millie is reluctant to come out of the house in the morning and I have noticed she is always first in at night otherwise Henrietta sits in the entrance and blocks her. I've just been down after witnessing the latest attack and she had run into the house to hide. Any tips gratefully received.

I don't think there is a great deal you can do about it except for put out extra feeders and drinkers and think about extending their run to give them more space with hiding places to escape to.  Whatever you do there will always be one hen bottom of the pecking order.  :(

You could possibly offer her to someone who doesn't have a run - just free range.  She might be happier there.

You could try picking up Henrietta and walking around with her so you are treated as the cockerel and thus reducing her to second place in pecking order.

You could also try caging the bully for a few days, she might lose her place in the pecking order.
