Drastic apple tree action!
« on: July 27, 2019, 10:55 »
Good morning or afternoon everyone,
I have an apple tree...large wound in the stem due to me growing mistletoe on it.  There is a water shoot emerging from the stem above the graft, if I cut the tree above this watershoot will it grow and become a productive apple tree in time?

Cheers,  Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Interesting coincidence here, Klefters!

Our two trees are nearly bereft of fruit for the second/third year, but there are several shoots appearing in quite useful positions. I'm wondering the same as you, if they'll get going again, but of course, you asked first!

Ours are about thirty years old, so may be approaching their sell-by date...

It should work but will take a few years and careful pruning to develope into a new fruit tree.

Quite right, Auntie!

If they don't work here, we always go to Ringdens in Flimwell, a place where we've spent squillions since the early seventies...

Good afternoon all,  I've searched diligently but cannot find anything about this practise.  I think I'll wait until winter then do the deed.

Cheers,   Tony.

Our two 'Lord Lambournes' are struggling, and at thirty years may be seeing a little of not much.

Today, os a result of this post, we're seriously going to look at some alterantives to our beloved 'George' and 'Mildred', as they are really not up to produce any more! (sob).

I rather fancy a couple of trees in big pots, as I can chat with them daily.

These decisions take more than a few minutes of our gardening discussions, and while we'd love to keep our  two stalwarts, they are getting beyond their lifetime...(sob again)...
