Chilli varieties that can cope with being outdoors
« on: December 22, 2011, 21:59 »
Can anyone recommend chillis that would be happy to be left outside (warm patio, London) in the summer? I fancy growing a lot this year and don't have the greenhouse space.

Previous trials - cayenne peppers (Fuego), success. Scotch bonnet - dismal failure.

Plenty will do on a London patio. Hungarian hot wax, definitinely.

There's a variety on realseeds website called Nigel's Outdoors Chilli... apparently coped beautifully in Wales so i'd imagine it will love a London patio

I've grown a few varieties outdoors.

Lemon Chillies (nice heirloom type)
Jalapenos
Wilkinson Patio (not sure of type, but nasty little b*ggers   :)

Thats just to name the ones I can remember.

The main thing is to make sure they get plenty of light and most info I've read says don't place them outside until it's 11 degrees day and night (end of May).

I've grown Superchilli in a cold greenhouse (glass panes missing, so very cold) for a few years and always get a huge crop. It's one of the tougher and more productive chillis. Other varieties I've grown there have done ok, but were not as able to cope with poor conditions.

We grew Joe's Long (cayenne type) outside two summers ago and it was very prolific

Let's face it- it depends on the weather we get, whether they do really well, or not!

The year before last I grew terrific chillis and peppers outside :) but last year the weather was dire, apart from a few weeks early in the year, and we had many nights down to 9/10C, and lots of windy days :(

So although a London patio will be a better environment than an open allotment site, all chillis do better with some summer heat  ;) The variety may make a bit of difference, but we need a good summer next year...PLEASE  8)

If it wasn't for the short afternoons - could you tell the difference between december and august?  Much the same temperature range isn't it ...     Oh yes - its raining - a bit.  Must be winter !

Agree with Mum - they're a bit borderline outdoors in this country and need better weather to thrive than many of us have had for the last few years.

Worth a try of course, but probably best not to put all your chilli-eggs in one patio-basket!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Thanks for the great advice everyone. I am going to opt for a mixture of all those mentioned over the next two seasons.

Happy Christmas ;)

Have you got a boiler flew or something of the like onto your patio? Put them near it. 8)

I grew this last summer and it produced quite a few even with the dismal summer we had  :)

I grew a Jalapeņo this year in a pot in the sheltered top end of our garden, I took it in before the frosts and it is now sitting on the dining room table and I am picking red pepers as and when I need them.  There was enough red ones last week for OH to put some in a bottle of Vodka as he fancied trying it.

I am going to try and overwinter it and will cut it back down when I have taken the last fruits from it.

I agree about the Hungarian Hot Wax - I ran out of greenhouse space and had some of these outside.  The crop was even better than the ones I'd left in the greenhouse
