Funny colour Runner Bean Leaves
« on: June 23, 2010, 09:05 »
The leaves on my runners are a very pale almost yellow colour with purple around the edge. The stalk is purple as well. They didn't start off this colour, they seem to have changed since planting them out. Not sure which variety they are but I know they were stringless. Flowers coming through now & they are red. Anyone any idea what's going on with them?

The weather, especially the cool and wind we've had lately  :(

Give them a liquid feed of some kind and hopefully they will recover.

Feed them with a liquid fertiliser.

The purple is probably a natural colour which is usually masked by the green colour.

Ah, that sounds like a good reason. I will pop down tis afternoon and give them a good feed. They have been planted in plenty of compost as well so that should help

The compost will help to hold water for them but will not provide a great deal in the way of nutrients.  Runner beans are very hungry thirsty plants !

Something like this happened to me last year. I got my allotment in late spring and the guy next to me gave me some surplus runner bean plants. They were a deep green when planted but soon started to go yellow - his did too. It was constantly windy at the time and not too warm and he said that was the cause. I just watered them well for the first week or so and they soon changed back to a more healthy green colour. Nothing to worry about, I think. Not even sure you need to feed them (although I did dig in some chicken pellets at the time of planting).
