pale runner bean leaves
« on: May 27, 2009, 18:11 »
Hi all

I just noticed when i planted a couple of new plantlings out for my runners that the existing ones although growing are pale in comparison. I think our soil could be either alkaline (quite chalky) or acidic (leylandei shedding branches onto plot) but its definatly short of humous and sees quite poor.

Is it missing something obvious or should i just add fertiliser(blood fish bone etc) all other veg (carrot, leek, swede kale onion) all seem ok.

Thanks

How did you prepare the soil before planting out your beans?

 seriously tho folks - I've got a similar problem with pale looking dwarf beans - the leaves look very light coloured compared to my runners - is it down to variety or are they missing some nutrients that heavy rain may have washed out of their pots? Ta

Mine were like this last year when i planted them out ~ here's a photo

I think its shock after planting and my main mistake was that i didn't harden them off properly.
Each plant was fine and produced healthy looking leaves after they got over the shock !!

My runner beans have just germinated and I've noticed that the leaves are a little yellowish. I sowed the seeds directly where I wanted them to grow.

Maybe it's the weather? We've had bouts of cold winds and scorching sun. I've got some seedlings that haven't quite finished pushing their way up out of the soil. I'm waiting on them before I give them all a feeding (hopefully it will be the right thing to do).

They need a bit more than that I'm afraid  ::)

Good soil preparation and loads of organing material in their trench is the answer to good beans

I would give them a mulch of some well rotted manure and hope for the best.  Growing veg is a learning curve, so put it down to experience and keep trying.

What do they need tho aunt sally - mine are still in their cells where they wer planted, so its not soil prep. It might just be me being an anxious mum, but the leaves are definitely paler that the runners, and they've been in longer

I am getting the impression that we are talking about the seed leaves. The photograph by jazzbyrd shows the seed leaves. They have done their job and will die off. The real runner bean leaves are totally different.
You shouldn't really have to feed runner beans. They fix their own nitrogen from the air. Water retention is the main issue. The same is happening to mine.
Wait until the true leaves appear-they look like the ash tree leaf.
