wart looking like growths on my spuds ?
« on: July 24, 2011, 23:15 »
Hi everyone,

we've been digging up our spuds some have the scab on them that i've seen the pictures from the other post - i haven't been watering them, but some of them have a wart like looking growth or a clump of warty growths on them - what is it ?  are they and the scaby spuds safe to eat if you cut it off ?  also when i've been digging out my earlies is it ok to plant my lates in the same space and then rotate to another patch the following year ?

Thank you

Scraping/peeling will remove scabby bumps/warts and be fine to eat ;)
When you say lates, do you mean Christmas potatoes? these are best planted in tubs so you can put them in the greenhouse when the weather gets cold.

Speaking in general terms and leaving Christmas spuds aside, the answer is a definate "no" to planting lates after earlies.

This is not a rotation issue, but a question of timing. Late spuds take much longer to mature and should therefore be planted at the same time - if not sooner - than earlies.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

For Christmas spuds, you plant an early variety as they are fast maturing.

You'll need more than fleece to keep the frosts out that we're likely to get before Christmas. It's OK it you're just expecting a couple of degrees of frost.
