Hi LL and welcome to the site

A pic would be great if you could?

Does it look like a small green tomato?

Are these at the base of the stem, near to the ground?

If so, it's quite common and just the spud trying to grow more.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

There are four of them growing out of the axils along the stem two of them are oval and two are pear shaped they have leaves growing around the tops. They are not seed pods from the flowers or new potatoes forming.  I would post a photograph if I could manage it.

How to do it in more ways than one, including downsizing, is all covered in the link that Argyllie gave.

Was wondering if it could be Aminopyralid damage-
http://www.allotment-garden.org/garden-diary/261/contaminated-manure-aminopyralid-update/
The straw in the manure is contaminated by herbicide use, we've had a few cases on our site this year.

I've done a lot of research on aminopyralid so haven't  used any form of horse manure on my plot for at least four or five years.  Been very busy today so haven't had time to look into trying  to post a photograph but will try again tomorrow.
