JohnB47,

What to do with all your garlic?

After your done roasting, pickling in oil, making soup, freezing and of course eating, you will have to remember to use some of this years harvest to plant for next years crop.

One of the best veg to be forever self sufficient in. I havn't bought garlic to eat or plant for about 3 years now. This years crop looks the best yet!!

Scrape the soil away and examine the bulb. If the skin is still soft and sappy leave a little longer. If it is papery it is time to lift.

It is a mistake to leave it too long as the skin often splits and exposes the individual cloves. It will not keep once it has done that. If left it sometimes rots or sprouts. Better too early than too late. I harvested mine 2 weeks ago and it sits on some wire drying. This is a month ahead of a usual season.

Do you keep a couple of bulbs until November and just replant?

No idea why but cloves from my own saved bulbs planted never seem to produce bulbs as big as those from new stock.

Yes, of course. I'd forgotten about that.

Cheers.

If you keep the biggest cloves until November and plant them, you should get good size bulbs.
