Would you use these for your raised beds?
« on: December 24, 2010, 14:26 »
I've been offered a load of decking boards from an old Pier on the south coast and was thinking of using them to build up some borders & beds. However, I was thinking that they'd been subjected to over a hundred years of sea spray. Any thoughts on whether it would be a bad idea to use them because of the salt in the wood?     Don't want to poison my soil eh.

I wouldn't think it was a problem - they'll be hardwood, probably oak or greenheart, and pretty impervious to salt - any salt on them will be close to the surface and won't amount to much anyway. Make a pool with tarpaulin and soak them in water for a few days to leach out most of what's there before using them if you're not sure  ;)

Lucky you - they'll be fine.  We will, however, need pictures of them when complete !

Pictures will of course be supplied (in two years when I've completed the beds!!). Thanks for your help everyone.  ;)

I'd avoid using them at all costs and send them directly to the address I'll send you in a PM.
