Nemesia
« on: May 11, 2014, 09:28 »
I bought a beautiful plant yesterday at Wisley. It was a Nemesia, 'Raspberries and Cream'
It was a bit pricey at £4.99 for a 1L pot.
Is it possible to take cuttings or to collect the seeds ?
Thank you in advance.

Many Nemesias are annual, but some of the perennial ones can be propagated by soft-wood cuttings taken in late summer and over-wintered to plant out the next year. I'm not sure about the seeds, but try it. The variety you have can be rather tender, so hope you can propagate it ok.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I have Nemesia Confetti, and one a dark mauve which I don't know the name off, both perennial. I take cuttings at any time from about now, about 2-3inches long and strip the leaves off the bottom third, they root quite easily. I use rooting powder and place a polythene bag over the pot and just stand on the greenhouse staging.

I also find them about in cracks in the paving so they must also be possible from seed.

I have also split  a plant and potted them up in the early spring to plant  out later when they've got going a little.

I have a plant that overwintered successfully this year, a pale mauve and white one with a strong sweet vanilla scent.

On Spana's recommendation I shall attempt some soft cuttings -- thank you for the tip  :D
