What's eating my strawberries?
« on: June 10, 2009, 19:33 »
Hello!  This is the first year I have grown strawberries, and they were all ripening beautifully in a pot up on a small wall.  Today, I am devastated to find that most of them have been eaten!!

I expect someone knows who the culprit is - if so, please tell me, and please tell me how to stop it/them!!

Thanks.

Good evening and welcome to the site. I would say the culprits are going to be slugs, snails or birds. :D

Thanks, but how do you stop any/all of them?   :( Does netting work on strawberries?

Netting to stop birds, slug pellets for the other two. :D

Mice, voles, squirrels all love to eat strawberries. That is why I grow most of my strawberries in boxes raised some 60 cms above ground.

solid brick wall or old stone wall?  old wall then probably mice and shrews.  but  they really need netting from the birds as well if you dont want to share!!

I have 6 plants in my green house and crop is lovely, couple every evening when watering the Tom plants!!  Last year it took me a while to figure out why i wasnt getting any rippening, in my tall planters, then noticed my troublesome chickens jumping in and spotting anything ripe enough to eat!
