Starting strawberries from seed
« on: January 27, 2009, 13:49 »
Hi,
Just got a new allotment a couple of weeks ago and planning what to put in where and when.
I was planning on ordering some strawberries but while I was in town I saw a strawberry starter kit in a £1 shop.
This included packet of seeds, small bag of compost and re-usable propagator.

However, it didn't say in the instructions when to sow!!

They are alpine type - when should I sow them? Indoors or greenhouse? Or what?

Thanks.

These are one of the few things you can sow now. Start them in the house as they'll need some warmth to develop quickly, and when the weather allows, put them outside. This should give you a headstart on some berries this year. Just remember to not overwater the soil as the damping off fungus will form and ruin your efforts.

Thanks Trillium (love the name!).

The box did reccomend putting the seeds in the freezer for two weeks so I have put them in and will so in 2 weeks if that's not too late?

I've never bothered freezing strawberry seeds; I just plant them and they'll grow, and I've grown many from seed. If you've already frozen them, don't worry. Just plant when the time is up. You won't get much fruit this year but they'll be way ahead in plant size for next year.

Have a look at this thread I started as I will be sowing some next month. Maybe you'd like to keep us updated on this thread:
