« on: April 06, 2011, 11:42 »
How would i allow her to do this ie would i have to remove her and eggs straight away into another coop/run or how long do i leave her with my other big birds etc, and what would i need to do she is very broody at the moment and isnt showing any signs of getting over it so thought a few chicks maybe?

I have just let my broody hatch her first chick  :D
Move her into a seperate run and if she is still wanting to sit after a few days slip your fertile eggs under her and count down 21 days.
You will need to make her leave the eggs at least twice a day to toilet and eat.
Have you thought what you will do if you get cockerals.
1 Hubby, 2 children, 2 Welsummers, 1 Leghorn Banty, 1 Wyandotte Banty, 1 Barnevelder, 2 Isa Brown, 1 Rhode Island, 1 Goldline,1 Maran, 2 Mottled Leghorns, 1 Leghorn cockerel & 2 Jack Russells

I let my broody hen get on with it with the other girls until the chicks started to hatch out, then I moved her and her chicks into another hen house and run.  It was my first time last year and if I had it all to do over again, I would have put her in the other hen house and run right away with her fertile eggs.  I wouldn't have let her be broody for six weeks before giving her fertile eggs, either.  Will give her the eggs right away this time around.  Live and learn.   ::)
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

I presume you have a cockerel, if yes then just choose even sized eggs and candle the eggs after 7 days (I never bothered and just wait the 21 days to see what hatches  :)).
Will you be able to cope with any cockerels that hatch?
Staffies are softer than you think.

So you have a cockerel, Yes?
Does it tread the hens?
Is your broody already sitting on some eggs?
If the answer is 'yes' then I would gentle move your broody and eggs into a seperate coop and let her get on with it.
Do you know how long she has been sitting on the eggs, it should take approx 21 days for chicks to hatch.
Check out Casey's topic on candling eggs and you could try this.
Good luck  :)
