fruit bushes in acid soil
« on: February 27, 2010, 13:17 »
I'm creating a new allotment plot on a site with heavy soil, ph 5.0

On one half (20' x 22') I'll plant blackcurrants, raspberries & blueberries. I had planned to build raised beds for the 2xblueberries so I could make the soil acidic, but now I've checked it I don't think I need to.

My question is: Will the blackcurrants & raspberries be happy in the soil as it is? If not, and I change the ph of the soil where I plant them, will the ph also change where the blueberries are planted (2' away from them)?

I have just done a quick lookup.  Currants and Raspberries like a slightly acid soil,  ideally want a pH of at least 5.5.

Your soil is not too far off and I would leave it alone.

However I am worried that your blueberries are so close.  Currant bushes get pretty large - say five to six feet across - are  they going to crowd the blueberries?

oops, I haven't explained it well - I'm allowing 5' per blackcurrant, with 2' paths between each plant, so there's also a 2' path between the currants and then the blueberries, and another 2' path between the blueberries and the raspsberries.

Thanks for the reply, Gillie. I'm hoping currants, raspberries & blueberries will each be happy in the same acid soil so I don't have to change it, or build beds!
