Leek moth rant
« on: September 24, 2016, 20:30 »
:nowink:just having a bit of a rant. This is now going to become all out war. For the 3rd year running they've struck again. All 120 plants were covered from the time they were planted with an assortment of bricks,slabs,2 Ltr bottles of water to keep the blessed blighters out and they STILL got in.
This is now getting personal I think  :nowink:.
Already trying to plan strategies for next year ...a bunker maybe with a glass roof. Rant over

I'm afraid I've given up with leeks (and onions and garlic but that's because of whiterot).

What I grow at the allotment is reducing rapidly:

Carrot Root Fly; leek moth; blight; white fly; white rot; all in all it don't leave a lot.

What did you cover them with? I've covered mine with enviromesh this year, that should stop it!

That's good mum as I'm planning on covering mine with enviromesh next year, well I was this year & never got round to it. What a mistake. Trouble is at this rate everything will be covered with it😱 Grumble grumble

I also find enviromesh works fine (provided you peg it down well. I was not very diligent in doing this on one of my bed this year so have some damage).

I used a fairly fine netting so looks like I'll be buying envoiromesh for next year. I will not be defeated. ;)

This might seem a silly question, Are the plants still edible or do you destroy them?

I found in the past, that if you cut the tops off, they will regrow somewhat - as long as the pest hasn't burrowed right down into the base.

I've cut them down but really not expecting them to resurrect themselves

Mine get mothed then come back ok as long as the plants aren't too stressed or the caterpillars don't go too far down.
I used to debris net them but maybe leaving them open means the birds do their thang and the grubs don't get to do too much damage?
