I have just planted some carrots in an oblong tub and was wondering do I cover them from the onset to deter the dreaded carrot fly or when they come through. I have never grown carrots before.

I tend to cover mine as soon as I plant them, if nothing else it helps warm the soil so they'll cone through a bit quicker.

I 'fleeced' mine as soon as  i sowed, same for my beets, (both in deep trays, 1's a guinea pig base). Just going to let them push up the fleece as they grow. My dad's had no probs this way for a few years now.

If they are in a tub covering them should be an easy option so why not - it can only help. 

Out on the plot mine take their chance - Autumn King seem to grow large enough and well enough to give me a good enough crop without too much damage...
