greyish/purple comb
« on: July 30, 2010, 09:49 »
Hi,
I've just read on here that a greyish/perple comb could be the sign of dehydration - is this correct?
I have one chicken who's stopped laying as she's an ex bat.  She's the smallest and lightest of our chickens and has grown back the fewest feathers. Having said that, she's top dog, was always very greedy and a real character.
Some time ago we noticed she had a limp, so modified the ramp to the coop to allow easier access. Now, her comb is this darker slightly greyer/purpley colour than the others and her face looks really pale.  I've checked repeatedly for red mite and don't think it's that. She's till eating but not as voraciously as before and generally sems to be slowing down.  I'd assumed this was just old age and wasnt planning on taking her to the vets.... Any ideas?

A purple comb usually indicates some kind of circulation problem, like heart failure.
