Are these leeks leggy?
« on: April 12, 2008, 15:44 »
Hi, I am starting my leeks off (or trying to) by growing them indoors to plant out "when they are pencil thick" as it says in all the books, and I have two questions

1) Are these looking okay - they shot up quite quick, and I trimmed the tops, the idea being to get some good roots growing. They have been in for about a month.

2) After how long do they thicken out enough to be planted out?

Any help much appreciated!

Look fine to me, but don't keep them inside. At most i would only have them in my mini greenhouse. Remember you can sow leeks outside.

It will will take a while before they get to pencil thickness, but they look good so don't worry.

I read about it on here - increases the amount of light that gets to the plants - stops them going leggy I read. The room I have had them in faces east, so morning sun only.

Yes get them outside, under cover at first, then gradually get them accustomed to the great outdoors. To me they look a little leggy, but not disasterously so.

I would be tempted to transplant them into a larger seed tray to give them more room, all that lot at 'pencil thickness' will need an area greater than the pot.

I would also in future make the foil a little higher.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Do you like leeks Matthew? If so, I hope you have some more on the go.

I have a large piece of cardboard covered in foil, that I stand behind the plants. so the light reflects back :)
