Grit / Oyster Shell
« on: April 17, 2011, 19:44 »
My friend gave me a galvanised metal holder for grit, which is supposed to hang off the mesh on the side of the run, but they constantly knock it off, or if I stand it on the ground, they stand in it, and still knock it over! Upshot is that I am getting through more than I need to, and there is grit everywhere

Oh wise chicken people - what is your solution?? I only have 2 girls.

We got galvanised dish also and had the same problem ended up using cable ties to secure it to  the mesh in the end  ;)

I have a metal cup that bolts to the mesh, and although they dont knock it over they do empty it as soon as its filled. Not much grit in the cup but they do still have grit on the floor! I just refill it every other day when i see there is none in the run, but use crushed egg shell with the bought grit so it lasts a bit longer.

If the grit is available, it doesn't matter if it's in the cup or on the ground.  I just smash up shells on a concrete slab and leave them where they fall.

I screw my gritbox to a piece of board or plywood and either hang it, screw it to the house outsude end wall or yie it with cord to the mesh of the run.  If you use a cup like cammi suggests you will need to keep it undercover or drill some drainage holes in the bottom to stop water accumulating
