Garlic- will it come up?
« on: November 13, 2010, 08:19 »
Planted lots of rather small cloves of my (this year's) garlic and a row of huge Spanish cloves bought from the greengrocer as an experiment.
They were planted about 4 weeks ago and the Spanish stuff is 4/5 inches high but no sign of mine...... :(
Makes me wonder whether to go and buy some more Spanish as I've got growing areas coming free now......and it's not too late......
Any opinions, folks?

One thing to watch as your experimenting, the Spanish garlic might get hit badly by the frost as it is not a variety grown in this climate.

if my experience is anything to go by, your home grown stuff will come up eventualy, and the spannish stuff will be killed or at least damaged by the first hard frost

Completly disagree with above comments regarding your spanish garlic.
I have only grown the tenneriffeeee garlic (bought from a supermarket) for the last 7 years, each year I save several bulbs and replant for the following years.
I always pop it in on the 3rd week of nov.
As I live much further north than the softies down south and never have aproblem, I would say dont worry about your garlic from spain.
Here is one of last years...

Remember the winter we had last year. They stayed in the ground right through it, not a problem.

Last Winter showed that some of the Mediterranean garlics were unable to cope with the harsh winter, even when they did well with me the previous year. So it will depend on how hard a Winter we get.

It will probably come up, planted mine 4-5 weeks ago and it is just visible now, well all except 4 or5 of the cloves. May lose a couple but expect the rest to make an appearance.

i did read somewhere that it is a good idea to keep and re plant from your own garlic crop as it is very good at adjusting its self to your conditions, eg soil and climate so although you planted spanish garlic 7 years ago i would not call it this 7 years on
first year grower

Well, Aidy, I'm going to splash out 30p a bulb on some more Spanish after seeing your amazing bulbs!
Can't hurt!
Is there anything special you do to get them that big?
