Which vegetables to cover up
« on: June 01, 2013, 15:06 »
Hi can any one give me some advice on which vegetables I need to cover up with insect netting to stop the pidgeons and rabbits eating them?
My cabbages are covered but my broccoli and sprouts were eaten as soon as they came up.  Is there anything else I need to cover?
Ive planted onions, beans, peas, carrots, swede, parsnips, marrow,  kohlrabi, raddish, lettuce, spinnach, leeks and parsnips.
As youve probably guessed Im a newby allotment holder and dont really know what Im doing yet!
thanks
Amanda

It seems to depend on plot, site and location. We have old boys down the bottom of our site who don't cover anything and never have a problem. If I left cabbages uncovered I'd have no cabbage.

I cover cabbages, peas at the start, sweetcorn, onion sets at the start, beetroot at the start, turnips, carrots. Etc etc. Years ago we won best plot for exquisite use of blue netting. Lol can you tell the judges didn't grow veg and didn't have a clue.  ::)

I don't care if my plot is blue as long as we get some fruit and veg, I also had to cover leeks the year before last, that was for mr badger though not pigeons or rabbits

From your list, I'd probably cover peas against the pigeons.

Carrots and parsnips benefit from very fine mesh against the carrot root fly.

I've not had a problem from pigeons on the other veggies (famous last words ...  ::) ).

Now slugs are a different matter ...  >:(
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I use ultra fine mesh on onions and leeks, carrots and all brassicas ;)

i'm a newbee to this growing mallarky too.

the only thing i've had trouble with is all the brassicas, although not sprouts for some reason.

suprisingly all the lettuce seems to be left alone. not done peas so can't comment on them.
