Hi peeps hows your braod beans doing? are they ready for picking? are they already been eaten, or not even planted out yet.

we've had our first signs of black fly and will be trying some rhubarb water on them this week.

I had my first feed of broad beans last night.  Pods about 9 inches long.  They were beautiful, tender and tasty.

This, by the way, was my first harvest from our new allotment...  I'm chuffed to bits  :D

My suttons are looking good. No blackfly yet or any bean weevil. Flowering well and will pinch tops out soon. Probably another month at least before I can harvest though - Aunt sally way ahead of me but mine were not overwintered.

I planted some in the autumn but they got killed off with the frost (and we had a very mild winter indeed).   Think I might have put them in too early since they were pretty soft looking.

Question for all please ... What is the hardest frost that you've had overwintering broad beans survive through - and which variety if you remember?

This is our first year so didn't have any over wintered ones.

Ours went in early March I think. They are about 18 inches tall now and are starting to get flowers on them.

My beans look as though I'll have a really decent crop.  But us soft southerners have only had about 3 light frosts this winter.

I planted 'Aquadulce' out last November and have had two pickings so far (and very nice they were too!). They are supposed to be quite frost resistant although to be honest we havent had any down this far.
