Flowering cactus
« on: May 30, 2007, 13:09 »
Below, I hope, is a photo of my cactus.  It was given to me by my sister when it was very small.  I kept it on the kitchen windowsill for years and then moved it to the greenhouse. I've tried to find out what it is, but it looks like several in the bopok and I can't decide between them.

It has had the odd flower on it but last year I left it out all summer and repotted it in proper cactus compost for the first time and look how it has rewarded me.  At least I hope you will be able to see it, I'm not so sure I've got this right as I am trying to do this with only one phone call to my son for help, instead of the usual dozens.

Looks as if your've only got half an address there Bagpuss, copy the full address of your image then click on the "IMG" button on the post reply toolbar.

If you still can't do it try this LINK or PM me and I'll try to post it for you.

Brilliant, thanks RR I've done it, even though it is huge and sideways.  I feel almost as proud at getting the photo on as I am of the cactus.

It's a fabulous flower show bagpuss.  8)  Unfortunatly many cacti's flowers are very similar.  For identification we would need a clear (and a bit largrer) picture of the green part  :D

Yeah, I'm not sure I'd exactly call it easy peasy but I'm getting there. :D

I hope this is a better picture showing the actual cactus, just before the flowers were fully out.  At least it should be the right way up this time.  So if anyone knows what it is I love to know.  Thanks.

That is a splendid plant Bagpuss.

I matches a picture in by house plant book - Gymnocalycium (possibly baldianum)
There are loads of these, have a look on google images.  I think yours beats most of them  :D

Thanks Aunt Sally.  I think you are right, it is certainly one of that family, I'm not sure which one though as the flowers are on quite long stalks.  Just shows what you can achieve if the slugs don't like a plant, if only my veggies would thrive like that, poor slug bitten things.
