Composter base or no base??
« on: March 01, 2013, 17:47 »
I am thinking of getting a composter and my council offer the darlek style ones at a discount price, but they also have a base for an extra charge.

I want one each for my garden and my allotment, do I need a base for both? I thought you just put them straight on the ground so the worms could get in .... Or is my imagination working overtime

Not at all sure why a dalek needs a base (unless it's a mesh-type designed to keep rats out, and then it would need to be heavy-gauge rustproofed steel to do the job.)

Just in case the "r" word has got you worried, I've got 3 daleks, two of which sit directly on the soil and in 10 years neither of them has ever had any "r's" in them as far as I'm aware.  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I'm not too scared about the r word haha!  :D not that I won't be screaming and legging it in the other direction if one pops his head out when I'm collecting compost!

The base looks to be plastic with holes and it says it will deter rodents...

I got 4 on the plot all with no bases.

I would not want a base because when i am ready to empty mine i just lift them up rather than bothering with the door and a base would probably prevent me doing this.

I also bury them about 9 inches in the ground to try and stop the rats.
