I inherated 12 hens which dont seem to be laying much (even though the previous person said that there only about a year old).  Some people on the site said for me to get a cockral and put that in with them as it will help encourage them to lay and its always best to keep a cock with them.  Is this true?

I went a good 6 months without a Doodle dooer  didn't effect any of my girls

Give them a look over for creepy crawlies they can slow egg production down
Can you be sure they're not laying elsewhere? Under bushes etc...
What breed are they?

What breed/type are they, some of the breeds lay more than others.

My Black Rock types lay daily, whereas the Light Sussex hens lay less often.

I don't think having a cockerel in with them will encourage them to lay more, you'll just get fertilised eggs.
